If you skipped the polls Tuesday, you had company. Just 39.8% of eligible North Dakota voters cast 239,488 ballots, the lowest turnout for a general election in the last 50 years.

Election Day carried most of the load. Secretary of State Michael Howe called the turnout "disappointing" and said he is "hopeful more North Dakotans will become civically engaged."

On WDAY Radio, Howe said it will be the lowest midterm turnout in 40-some years. He wondered if "people are happy with how things are" and said "it's gone seamlessly," though an election judge handed a handful of voters ballots from the wrong stack.

  • Results stay unofficial until county canvassing boards meet Nov. 16
  • certifies results Nov. 18
  • Poll workers: 3,000 stepped forward, Howe said

The measure doesn't increase the district's taxing authority. It lets the district levy up to 110 general fund mills starting Dec. 31, 2027, when a 127-mill levy approved in 2017 expires. Before the vote, the district said it wasn't asking for a budget increase.

“We're going to see an increase in class sizes, and we would also see a reduction in the amount of programs that we can offer.”

Dr. Cory Steiner, Fargo superintendent, on what a no vote would mean

$2 to $2.5 millionestimated yearly budget gap if the levy had failed

A no vote would have frozen district property tax revenue at 2027-28 collections until statutory limits caught up around 2042.

  • Length: up to 10 taxable years without reauthorization
  • Starts: Dec. 31, 2027
  • Miscellaneous and tuition fund mills continue outside the measure
