- ➤ Local broadcaster Don Haney retired after more than 30 years at KFGO, during which he covered major stories like the 1997 floods and the Standing Rock protests — and he said he will spend more time with his adult children while enjoying his record collection. KVRR
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Midco will spend $18 million to upgrade the fiber network so over 36,000 homes and businesses get faster internet and better security by 2026—later work in Mapleton, Dilworth, Harwood, Casselton, Oxbow, Frontier, Reiles Acres and Sabin will follow in 2027 with the full Fargo-Moorhead area complete by 2028. - ➤ Fargo-Moorhead Opera will stage Verdi’s La Traviata, a classic tale of a scarlet woman who falls in love with a wealthy client and sacrifices everything for love—artistic director Joshua Kohl and executive director Regina Thiel say the fresh, modern production will offer a new view of the timeless tragedy. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Fargo was named the best college town in North Dakota by WalletHub’s Best College Towns and Cities report, ranking 30th among more than 400 U.S. cities. It also placed 11th among midsize cities, showing that local students benefit from affordable living, quality education, and many local amenities—such as restaurants, coffee shops and outdoor trails. - ➤ Northern Cass Public School received the Blue Ribbon Award for excellence in academics and extracurricular support, making it one of only three state winners among nearly 500 schools — both state superintendent Kirsten Baesler and newly appointed Terry Baesler praised the students and staff for their hard work. - ➤ North Dakota has enough funds to pay SNAP benefits in November if the shutdown continues past Oct. 31—officials warned that funds cannot be loaded onto EBT cards so benefits will pause on Nov. 1. Food banks and state leaders are preparing for a rise in people seeking food assistance. KVRR
