- ➤ Indigenous Peoples Day is recognized in North Dakota and Minnesota to honor Native American heritage—Brandon Baity of Fargo’s Indigenous Association said the holiday shows indigenous people are a vital part of our community. Minnesota State Representative Heather Keeler explained that local educators helped secure the official recognition of the day. KVRR

- ➤ Steve Forbes will speak on economic freedom on October 23 at 5:30 p.m. in the NDSU Memorial Union’s Oceti Sakowin Ballroom—audience members will join a Q&A and a reception with hors-d'oeuvres following the presentation. NDSU
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Fargo Public Schools is asking local residents to submit name suggestions for its new northside elementary school to be built on the site of Horace Mann Elementary in the 1000 block of 3rd Street North. The school board will narrow submissions to a Top 5—finalized on November 12 with the chosen name announced on November 25, and the school will start in fall 2028 by bringing together students from Horace Mann, Roosevelt, and Madison. - ➤ On Oct. 4, Midway Public School District organized an arts field trip where 6th-12th grade art club students visited studios featuring nude works and saw chaperones who identified as furries—one as a cat/fox and the other as a bug—that made animal sounds. The district superintendent said the art club advisor planned the visit to avoid sensitive exhibits and noted there have been no complaints from students, parents, or staff since the trip. - ➤ NDSU will host Kari Heerman on Friday, Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. in Beckwith Recital Hall to discuss how shifting trade policies are reshaping the global economy during the Human Progress and Flourishing Workshop—refreshments are served at 11 a.m. in the Challey School of Music Atrium and the event is free and open to the public. - ➤ On October 4, students in grades 6 through 12 from the Art Club took part in an arts showcase field trip organized by the Midway Public School District that included visits to studios featuring artworks with nudity. An anonymous source said some chaperones—who identified as furries—behaved in ways that made the students uncomfortable, but the school superintendent confirmed no complaints were received. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ An international commission will review permits for two large dairy projects planned near the Red River that will host 37,500 cows and produce 214 million gallons of manure each year + raise concerns about water quality. Manitoba and environmental officials worry the projects could hurt Lake Winnipeg while North Dakota maintains its permits meet strict standards. KVRR

- ➤ North Dakota State starting quarterback Cole Payton was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week after he recorded 291 yards of offense and three touchdowns in Monday’s 45–17 win over Southern Illinois—marking his second award in three weeks.
