ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A state report found more than 19,500 oil producing wells were operating in July, which is 38 more than the previous month—officials noted this rise came with a slight increase in active oil and natural gas rigs that now total 27. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ At the Fargo City Commission meeting on Monday, Commissioner John Strand’s motion to delay a full-time mayor role failed 4-1 and commissioners approved making the job full-time starting June 1—endorsed by Commissioner Denise Kolpack. The approved budget sets aside $25,000 for half a year—rising to $50,000 next year. WDAY Radio
- ➤ North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong and Governor Larry Rhoden joined 23 other governors in writing a letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune urging Congress to pass a bipartisan short-term funding measure— a straightforward solution to prevent a government shutdown. WDAY Radio
- ➤ Rocky Schneider, head of the Downtown Community Partnership, said that downtown felt safe when police focused there—problems returned as officer numbers dropped after schools reopened. He noted that on September 25 the group discussed a $93 million apartment complex and is now seeking public input to update local amenities. WDAY Radio
- ➤ Federal disaster loans are available for North Dakota non-profits damaged by the June storms—helping them repair structures and restart operations. The loans offer up to $2 million at 3.6% interest with no payments the first year—property damage applications are due by November 10 while economic injury applications are due by June 11. WDAY Radio
- ➤ The Fargo City Commission met to review relocations of the Downtown Engagement Center—three sites were discussed while public feedback showed mixed opinions. - ➤ Fargo City Commissioners approved a balanced $140.6 million budget for 2026 and decided to make the mayor’s job full-time starting in June when an election for a new mayor will be held; the 3-2 vote also passed measures including job cuts, increased MATBUS rates, and a small property tax raise. The budget adds $5.8 million from the voter approved Public Safety Sales Tax to help balance revenues while limiting capital investments as required by state law. KVRR
- ➤ On Monday, the Fargo City Commission voted to make the mayor’s job full-time starting June 1. Commissioner John Strand asked to delay the change indefinitely but a 3 to 2 vote approved a budget allotting $25,000 for the first half-year and $50,000 for the next year — City Commissioner Denise Kolpack said Fargo is ready for a full-time mayor.
