COMMUNITY NEWS

  • West Fargo Police Department is raising money for breast cancer research during Breast Cancer Awareness Month by selling patches, commemorative coins, and apparel online until September 28th (all proceeds benefit the Edith Sanford Breast Center). Community Engagement Officer Rhonda Jorgensen said her close friend's diagnosis inspired the project.  AM 1100 The Flag

CRIME NEWS

  • Conservative talk radio host Charlie Kirk was assassinated Wednesday while speaking at a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University — he often visited North Dakota, having once spoken to a one-student graduating class at Johnson Corner Christian Academy near Watford City, and was scheduled to return in October for a stop at the University of North Dakota.  WDAY Radio

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Officials at UND and NDSU warned that federal research dollars for key projects will drop after the executive branch terminated grants—losing more than $3 million this year—and future cuts may force the universities to cover urgent costs. The institutions expect that these funding losses will further reduce support for biomedical, engineering and environmental research.  KVRR
  • Fargo Public Schools School Board has selected ICON Architectural Group to design a new elementary school at the Horace Mann site. The three-story building will feature grade-level learning hubs, a secure main entry, and dedicated STEAM and visual arts suites — it will open in fall 2028.  AM 1100 The Flag
  • Fargo Public Schools and Northern Cass School in Hunter are testing a lead teacher program that would let a team of teachers share classroom duties—15 teachers will travel to Arizona this month for specialized training to help improve student bonds and teacher retention while keeping costs steady.  AM 1100 The Flag

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fire Station 5—West Acres Fire Station—in south Fargo reopened after being closed since August 2024 due to shifting foundation cracks; the city spent $2.5 million on reconstruction and emergency calls were rerouted to other local stations.  KVRR
  • Work on the 32nd Avenue project in south Fargo is nearly finished and will open Saturday. The contractor Dakota Underground will receive a $150,000 bonus—reward for completing the $18 million reconstruction a month early with upgrades to roads, sewers, water mains, and sidewalks.  KVRR
