EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Alexey Leontyev, an NDSU chemistry professor, has received an NSF CAREER Award of $868,229 to build a new green chemistry assessment tool that uses artificial intelligence to give partial credit for student answers. The project will help instructors measure understanding and link chemistry education to local agricultural practices. NDSU
- ➤ West Fargo Public Schools is expanding bus service that was cut during the pandemic — the district will restore routes and expand zones to let 400 more students ride, and extra drivers have been hired for special education routes ahead of today's first day of school. AM 1100 The Flag
- ➤ West Fargo and Hillsboro schools will now keep phones, smartwatches and other personal devices off limits for the full school day—students must turn them in at the start and retrieve them only at the end. Both districts have set three levels of consequences, where the first offense means the device is held at the main office, the second requires a guardian to pick it up, and the third leads to further penalties. - ➤ Fargo mayor Dr. Tim Mahoney backed a plan for a remote police workstation at a Scheels store—saying police chief David Zibolski should have communicated better—after city leaders were surprised when the proposal was moved to debate and passed by a 3-2 vote on August 18. WDAY Radio

- ➤ The Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks beat the Gary SouthShore RailCats 8 to 0 on Tuesday night with Kyle Krigger striking out nine batters in 7⅓ scoreless innings and Parker Harm earning a scoreless ninth inning—Michael Hallquist drove in three runs and Jose Sermo added two RBI.
