CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Esiquio Hernandez pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated assault for a downtown Fargo beating in April 2024 that left Sam Pikula with broken facial bones and a titanium plate in his forehead—he also pleaded guilty to another aggravated assault at Old Broadway last month and was sentenced to four years in prison as three others have been sentenced while one awaits sentencing and a sixth is set for trial later this year. - ➤ Essentia Health hospital on 32nd Avenue South in Fargo went on lockdown Wednesday morning after an individual inside reportedly threatened a mass shooting—Fargo Police are investigating the call. WDAY Radio

- ➤ North Dakota attorneys and court officials said a gap in federal funds forced some experienced panel lawyers to withdraw from public defense work and threatened timely representation for federal criminal defendants. They urged Congress to provide about $116 million—enough to pay panel lawyers and avoid further delays in federal trials. KVRR
- ➤ North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong testified on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C. on Wednesday before the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works to urge Congress to maintain federal funding and streamline permitting processes—aiming to reduce project delays and costs for vital transportation links. - ➤ Folkways asked city officials to close one block of Broadway for its Night Bazaar on July 24—an event that will attempt to break the world record for most s’mores eaten at one time and draw over 1,200 participants. After initial street closure requests were denied, discussions with Commissioner Kolpack and community input have led the group to expect an amended motion that will permit the closure starting at 6 p.m. KVRR
- ➤ Two North Dakota tribes and tribal citizens asked the U.S. Supreme Court to keep the current district map in place while it reviews a lawsuit alleging that the 2021 redistricting plan diluted Indigenous votes—plaintiffs warn that if the map is reinstated, lawmakers like Rep. Collette Brown could lose their seats. The Supreme Court set a July 22 deadline for North Dakota to file its response while the legal debate continues. KVRR
