- ➤ Fargo Park District announced that Island Park Pool will host its grand opening on Monday, June 16 with a ribbon-cutting at 11:30 a.m. and a celebration from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. (the event will feature a live DJ, giveaways, and free ice cream from a local truck). KVRR
- ➤ Beyond Shelter opened its new headquarters on 25th Avenue South near Plaza Apartments after 25 years of building affordable housing; development director Christopher Miller said the ribbon cutting marked a milestone — community members and Mayor Tim Mahoney praised the nonprofit’s long-term impact. The organization has completed 45 projects and built 1,360 homes during that time. KVRR

- ➤ Emily Mikhail, an NDSU junior who studies mechanical engineering and physics, was named a 2025-26 Astronaut Scholar by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation as one of 74 students chosen from 51 colleges. She will get up to $15,000 and a paid trip to an event set for Aug. 13—16 at the Omni Houston Hotel in Houston—with mentoring and learning opportunities in STEM. NDSU

- ➤ Spirit Lake Nation will extend water distribution until June 25 as officials work on a temporary fix for drinking water made unsafe by elevated manganese levels—boiling the water does not remove the impurity. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Fargo city engineer Tom Knakmuhs said renewing the 1% infrastructure sales tax—set to expire at the end of 2028—is needed to fund nearly every road project and maintain the water system, as failing to do so could force the city to raise utility rates. AM 1100 The Flag
- ➤ A committee has picked Grand Forks Fire Chief Gary Lorenz to be Fargo’s next Fire Chief, and his long service is expected to keep the fire department strong. The city commission will review his appointment on June 9 and, if approved, he will begin in July to take over after Steve Dirksen resigned in May — a change meant to protect our community. - ➤ Fargo Police have begun using four new trikkes to patrol downtown for quicker response and improved community interaction after their debut at a recent Fargo Marathon; officers say the vehicles will be deployed over the summer — including at the Fargo Street Fair — to address urban challenges. HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Prairie Winds Veterinary Center in Fargo-Moorhead confirmed canine parvovirus in three litters of puppies, a juvenile dog and a household puppy after treating 21 puppies with monoclonal antibodies where 19 recovered. The center advises dog owners to vaccinate their pets since the virus causes severe gastrointestinal problems + costly treatment. WDAY Radio
