- ➤ North Dakota will adopt an 80-mph speed limit as one of nine states while public safety advocates warn that higher speeds cut the time available to react to roadway hazards—especially with low fines for speeding over the limit. Former highway patrol captain Ed Gruchalla said that the fine system, which sets a $20 minimum in slower zones and $5 per mile over 65 mph, will not deter speeding effectively—raising concerns over road safety.
