- ➤ Assistant professor Eglantina Lopez Echartea at NDSU is studying how wildfires affect farm soil using an NSF RAPID award — her work started in March — to help farmers decide on ways to restore soil health. Early findings show burnt soil grows seeds like unburnt soil — a promising sign — and that fires are starting earlier, which could harm farms. NDSU
